The atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki during World War II marked a significant turning point of the war, leading to the unconditional surrender of Japan. But in succeeding years, the bombings have been highly controversial, with advocates using them as examples of American cruelty and ruthlessness as well as American practicality and humaneness.
