finally!
i had built the php5 stuff yesterday i think, but since the old version was still loaded into memory with apache, it all worked
the entire webserver was down for a while because it kept crashing whenever I tried to go to a page that uses php
ended up rebuilding apache, and it all seems to work spiffy now
