CCA Calls For Potter Ban

Joe. My. God.: CCA Calls For Potter Ban
The “nation’s largest” conservative organization, the Christian Coalition of America, has called for a ban of Harry Potter books and movies after author J.K. Rowling’s revelation last week that Hogwarts head wizard Albus Dumbledore is gay. CCA chairman Roberta Combs: “It’s not a good example for our children, who really like the books and the movies. I think it encourages homosexuality. I would never allow my own children or grandchildren to read the books or watch the movies, and other parents should do so too.”

ugh.  I can’t really continue posting about it, because its so stupid that anyone would care that, oh, Dumbledore didn’t every fall in love and he was gay.  Who cares!  Was the religious right pro-potter before Dumbledore was known to be gay? I seem to remember them boycotting it because it was evil and had witchcraft?

Besides, if they couldn’t tell the first time they read the books, how does it change whether or not Dumbledore “seems” gay?  Because I sure didn’t even think that he might be.

  • Justin- please know that there are many, many conservative Christians (like me) who find this kind of misguided wrath against books like Harry Potter absolutely idiotic. It’s a shame that there is this term “religious right”. It tends to suggest the notion that everyone who is a very devoted Christian is a whack-job, holier-than-thou, science-ignoring, gay-hating hypocrite. There is no doubt that the majority of us are quite different from that. It’s a shame that someone like “Reverend” Phelps is recognized as a Christian.
