Snow Makers

Howstuffworks “How Snow Makers Work”

Snowmaking plays a part in agriculture as well. A good coating of snow keeps a lot of the earth’s heat from escaping into the atmosphere, so farmers often use it as an insulator for winter crops. The insulation effect keeps the crops from freezing, even when the temperature drops well below 32 degrees Fahrenheit (0 C).

Carrying the fresh water to the snowmaking machine often requires an intricate plumbing system, such as a “pipe within a pipe”, the inner pipe carrying hot alcohol to prevent the water in the outer pipe from freezing.

I ‘ve always wondered how they keep it from freezing solid in the pipes.  I can see how it might not freeze when the water is flowing full speed to everywhere, but soon as it stops, the heated alcohol mixture seems good.

The bad part about snow making is skiing underneath one too close to the jet spray.  The water is still liquid and it coats you and your goggles.

I didn’t even think about the high pressure air being how the other guns worked.
