Free Speech and Those in Power

Joe. My. God.: University Official Canned For Anti-Gay Column

Crystal Dixon, Previous VP of HR @ University of Toledo:

I cannot wake up tomorrow and not be a Black woman. I am genetically and biologically a Black woman and very pleased to be so as my Creator intended. Daily, thousands of homosexuals make a life decision to leave the gay lifestyle evidenced by the growing population of PFOX (Parents and Friends of Ex Gays) and Exodus International just to name a few.

This woman has no intention of backing down, learning about lgbt people, or changing her mind. She has God on her side.

I never know what to think when cases like this come up.  I don’t like when people use their positions of power to make what I believe are false statements.  The biggest problem with “free speech” is the line between free speech and hate speech.  I do not think that hate speech should be allowed, and generally it is not.  The main problem with hate speech concerning gays is that the “Christian Right” believe they are preaching the truth, but the rest of us know it to be harmful hate-speech.

In this particular case, she is saying that she made the comments as a private citizen, which, while I don’t agree with private citizens making what I believe is hate speech, they are allowed to do.  The problem is that she is the Vice President of Human Resources at the University of Toledo, AND she mentioned her association in her guest column.

She basically said that being black is so much harder than being gay.  Thats fine to have that opinion.  Then she went on to say that its gay people’s fault they are gay, so they should have to deal with the consequences of not being “right” with her opinion of God’s view.

Make sure to read Pam’s House Blend on the topic.
