Strawberry Shortcake

Yesterday Kevin and I made strawberry shortcakes to take to a party. I de-stemmed 3 quarts of strawberries, and then kevin cut them into smaller pieces while I took some of them and mushed them and added sugar to form the sauce base. We combined with the other cut up strawberries, and then took a pint of cleaned blueberries and kevin squeezed some of them in his hand into the strawberries. He added the rest of the blueberries to the mashed strawberry and blueberry mixture and we put it in the fridge to sweeten up.

While this was happening we made shortcakes from the recipe on the Bisquick box. When I was growing up we used Jiffy, which is essentially Bisquick without the advertising. We, however, made strawberry shortcake in a 9×13 pan and cut squares out of it to serve. Kevin makes individual shortcakes out of discs of dough.

Here come the big differences though. My family serves the shortcake with the strawberries on top in a bowl. You then add milk to create a cold, delicious dessert. Kevin serves the shortcake with strawberries on top, but he serves it with whipped cream. I like the whipped cream, but I think that the shortcake’s dryness is better suited to cold, delicious milk. Do you eat strawberry shortcake? How do you eat it? In the little pre-made cups you can get @ the grocery store? (I don’t think I have ever had one of those)

  • I, like you, grew up using Jiffy and made strawberry shortcake in a 9×13 pan and ate them with milk. GO FIGURE. However, since living with only a microwave and no oven to bake such things in at school, I have once bought the pre-made cups from the grocery store. They, are no where near as tasty. But, I was informed by my California mom named Liz that you are to put whipped cream on them. and that, my brother, is what we did. but i believe i prefer milk. and homemade shortcakes. And this was a really long reply.
