5:01 PM - Towleroad, More than gay news for more gay men
At 5:01pm today, history will be made as gay and lesbian couples begin marrying in California, led symbolically by the marriage of Del Martin and Phyllis Lyon, the couple of 50 years who were first married in San Francisco City Hall in 2004
(their 2004 marriage was not a legal one, now it will be)
The above post on Towelroad has a bunch of related information about marriage in CA.
I think alot of people still don’t understand that a civil union isn’t the same thing as a marriage, and that a civil union doesn’t get you the same rights as a marriage does in the eyes of the law. The kind of marriage that most gay people want has nothing to do with a church unless the church wants to be involved.
I haven’t read anything about gay people trying to trick churches into marrying them. Like I think I said before, I know someone whose pastor refused to marry them because the couple lived together. I don’t ever recall there being a law that says that religious “officials” have to marry people if the people want married.
Anyway, I hope that the people of CA aren’t lead like sheep by the religious right into voting against legal protection for everyone, even people they don’t like.
