Potting soil fire destroys home

Potting soil fire destroys home - UPI.com
ST. PAUL, Minn., July 18 (UPI) — Fire investigators in Minnesota say a blaze that gutted a house began with spontaneous combustion in a flowerpot.

St. Paul Fire Chief John Maczko said that the plastic pot, full of potting soil, was on a plastic table on the deck of a home in the Mendota Heights neighborhood, the St. Paul Pioneer Press reported. The right combination of heat and humidity caused the soil to get hotter to the point where it burst into flames.

That’s it, you will soon no longer allowed to bring potting soil onto a plane, no matter how small the amount or how many containers it is in. Even the dirt on your shoes could possibly be combined with the dirt of your friend’s shoes and you could start a fire.

Won’t someone think of the horticulturalists!
